There are several good books available on subjects pertaining to equine welfare - one of these books is.

Give a Horse a Second Chance - Adopting and Caring for Rescue Horses

This book has been favorably reviewed by many premier horse publications:

Western Horseman - August 2007 Issue - Bunkhouse Reviews - pg.170 -

“Wise initially considers why horses must be rescued, legitimate adoption facilities, the adoption process, and selecting and appropriate horse to adopt.

Chapters devoted to horse health address not only routine equine care, but also special needs for malnourished, abused, or old horses.”

Tips on Dealing with Moon Blindness

Got a couple of tips (learned the hard way) for those of you out there fighting the good fight with recurrent uveitis (moon blindness). Guardian Masks work well to help keep a horse from rubbing those eyes and irritating them. The masks also block out ultraviolet light so that you can turn the horse out, but be sure to follow your vet’s instructions before you even think of turning a horse out - especially with an active flare-up - or if he’s on atropine. You can blind a horse suffering with a uveitis flare-up if you are not extremely careful.

Cold compresses seem to help keep the horse more comfortable. You can also try using commercial preparations containing devil’s claw to help with the inflammation. Once again, get your vet’s opinion on any medications you give a horse with moon blindness before you try them. It is also very important to follow your vet’s instructions to the letter regarding any medications he prescribes for your horse.

Submitted by J.R. Wise, author of “Give a Horse a Second Chance- Adopting and Caring for Rescue Horses."

Breeder Alert Foaling Monitor Approaching 29 Years of Service

Rogue River, OR – January 8, 2008 – Breeder Alert®, creators of the oldest halter foaling monitor manufactured in the U.S. on the market, now offers a foaling monitor with improved transmitter pouch design. Made with durable canvas, it offers a more compact and lighter pouch for added comfort and stability. The new pouch securely attaches with velcro strap below the jaw line providing better monitoring of mare’s head position. The smaller nylon pouch eliminates the buckle and improves the fit with more comfort to the mare. The pouch easily attaches to mare’s halter whether used on Miniatures or Draft horses.

Breeder Alert® foaling alarms are popular with breeders and veterinarians. If you have a pregnant mare, want to be there when she is giving birth, and are tired of staying up all night, Breeder Alert® foaling monitors, will alert you to the impending birth. Breeder Alert® will notify you through a pager or call you on your phone.

For more information visit www.breederalert.com or Contact Sales Department at Breeder Alert (subsidiary of Allsman Enterprises, LLC), P.O.
Wind Power Helps Provide Security for Stud Farm

Safe and Secure 24 (Stockport), specialists in wireless Live Monitored Security Systems, accepted the challenge at Meridian Stud near Leek, Staffordshire. David Cole of Safe and Secure24 (0161 494 2937) says he was delighted to take up the challenge that Meridian’s owner, Emma Shufflebotham, set by wanting total security powered by wind turbines. Apart from intruder, the system can protect in cases of fire and personnel safety. This is particularly important as the farm does not have the advantage of a telephone land line.

Construction delays have meant intermittent power for the laboratory creating a challenge to achieve the desired level of security. The system installed by Safe and Secure 24 incorporates intruder, smoke and emergency sensors and can be operated independently of an external power supply. Using GSM technology, on activation the equipment provides an immediate link to trained operatives who listen to activity at the property and take appropriate action.

Other deciding factors in choosing Safe and Secure 24 (Stockport) are that wireless technology allows for easy configuration changes to the system as the business develops; incorporation of wrist band activators give support for personnel working alone in the building (particularly important when working with horses); there are no call-out charges; no long term contracts and the support of a national organisation.

As a horse tragic I have established a business, Accessories Unleashed, and designed a new range of accessories for all the other horse tragics out there. The aim of this venture is to create a viable and sustainable way to support animal welfare organisations through a commercial venture.
One of these organisations which Accessories Unleashed supports is Horse Rescue.
Honey, a beautiful palomino quarter horse from Horse Rescue, is with us and being rehabilitated as she has been badly abused and mistreated. Six months ago Honey was starving. Today she is well covered and shiney. She is slowly regaining confidence and now allows us to groom her without nervously flinching at the brush.
Through our range of bags, wallets, socks, jewellry, watches and other accessories we hope to provide continued support for other needy horses and animal welfare organisations, which are identified on our website.
We are really proud of our new products and have so far had a great response and very positive feedback.
