JOINT STATEMENT FROM
The British Endurance Riding Association
The Endurance Horse & Pony Society
The Scottish Endurance Riding Club
ON THE OUTBREAK OF FOOT & MOUTH DISEASE
As a result of the continued and worsening Foot and Mouth Disease crisis, the British Endurance Riding Association (BERA), the Endurance Horse & Pony Society of GB (EHPS) and the Scottish Endurance Riding Club (SERC) have had no hesitation in cancelling ALL their events planned to take place in March 2001. All three organisations will also keep the situation under regular review and will be making further statements as appropriate.
The BEF have advised all owners and organisers to take the greatest possible care and recommended that equestrian activity is reduced as much as possible, both within infected areas and outside them. This advice was particularly strongly given where cross-country riding, the use of bridleways and the road network is concerned. Therefore BERA, the EHPS and SERC recommend that their members do not exercise their horses outside the boundaries of their own property. Furthermore, horses should not be transported in lorries or trailers to any other location, unless in an emergency.
