BHS Joins With Hickstead To Find Young Showing Stewards

Hickstead and the British Horse Society are jointly considering a scheme to find and train the show stewards of the future.

An Apprentice Steward Scheme would seek young candidates from British Horse Society members and non-members and these would be asked to a selection day.
Those chosen to join the scheme will be invited to a briefing and training day before the BHS-owned Royal International Horse Show (July 23-27).

Hickstead show secretary Lizzie Bunn has been concerned about replacing stewards as they retire or move out of the area. Because of her worries, this scheme was suggested by showing director Roger Stack, who was supported at a recent meeting by BHS chief executive Mrs Kay Driver.

"The whole showing structure in this country relies on volunteers, and not enough new ones are coming forward," said Mr Stack. "This scheme, we hope, will encourage young people who can benefit from working with the experienced stewards they will ultimately replace."

Kay Driver commented: "I believe this opportunity may appeal to our younger members. The Society will create a certificate to be presented in recognition of their basic training and competence."

Successful candidates may be invited to help at Hickstead or other shows this season.
