The British Horse Society points the way forward for rights of way - the next step

The next instalment of the new Access and Rights of Way training programme from The British Horse Society is now available in the South West. The programme will benefit hundreds of riders throughout the region and will be held at Marston House near Frome, by kind permission of Mrs Angela Yeoman, on Saturday, 6 March 2004.

Access and Rights of Way volunteers from the BHS and Affiliated Bridleways Groups in the South West have already attended the first step of the training programme, covering topics such as Highway Law, the history of the Definitive Map, Finding Bridleways, and Rights of Way Improvement Plans. The next step of training brings the more detailed aspects of the Definitive Map (the legal record of public rights of way) with talks on the history of the Definitive Map, collecting user evidence and the wider access issues such as common land and public open spaces. There will also be opportunities to ask questions from a panel consisting of the BHS independent Legal Advisor to Access and Rights of Way, BHS staff and members of the BHS Access and Rights of Way Advisory Group, who set the policy for the BHS.

Access to safe off-road riding is needed by all horse riders to enable them to avoid riding on the increasingly busy roads and to further enjoy the pleasures of riding in the countryside. Many volunteers work on their behalf and are committed to maintaining and improving the bridleway network throughout the country. This often involves dealing with Local and District Councils, Highways Agencies and other official offices.

For further information or an application form please contact the BHS Access Department on 01926 707812 or 707813.
