Ireland finish 4th in Nations Cup in Sweden

The loss of Trevor Coyle possibly deprived Ireland of another international success in the Samsung Nations Cup at Falsterbo Sweden today, with the Irish having to settle for fourth place behind Sweden, USA and the Netherlands.

Chef d'Equipe Gerry Mullins said afterwards that he believed Ireland could have won the competition had Coyle, who would have ridden Fleur, not been forced to withdraw due to a hand injury.

Lying just a time penalty point off the lead after the first round, the Irish challenge continued with Clement McMahon steering Gelvin Clover clear for a second time, while Lt. Shane Carey on Killossory and Peter Charles with Carnavelly followed with just one down and a penalty point each.

However, a stunning three second-round clears in a row by the Swedish team wrapped up the competition to the delight of the home crowd.

It was a tough baptism though for Nations Cup newcomer Killossory Kruisette ridden by Lt. David O'Brien, who picked up 30 faults over the two rounds. "She's a very young mare, and she was doing well in the second round but she just ran out of petrol", said Mullins.
