PETER Smyth from Strabane, Co. Tyrone, was the only Irish rider to claim a place on the opening day of the three-star show at Vichy, France, today (Friday).

Riding <Western Fairway>, the defending Irish national Grand Prix League champion held off a challenge from France's Simon Delestre in the Accumulator class, finishing a second-and-a-half ahead on time.
