IN freezing temperatures in the Finnish capital of Helsinki, Ireland's sole rider, Lt. David O'Brien, took victory tonight (Saturday) in the 1m40 competition, seeing off strong competition from German ace Franke Sloothaak and France's Michel Hecart.

Riding the nine yr-old Clover Hill mare <Lismore Clover>, O'Brien had almost two seconds in hand over Sloothaak, on the eight yr-old gelding <Sundance K>.

O'Brien has three horses at Helsinki, and earlier this week took a second place in the Helsinki 1m40 Trophy competition, also riding <Lismore Clover>. Later tonight he will ride the Cruising mare, <Cruise Hill>, in the Helsinki Puissance.
