Al Fares Proves A Big Hit For Trade
THE Al Fares Dubai International Trade Fair proved to be one of the year's most successful foreign trade event for British exhibitors.
Thanks to funding from Trade Partners UK under the SESA (Support for Exhibitions and Seminars Abroad) scheme, which was secured by BETA, the show drew some 49 British exhibitors.
BETA Chief Executive and Secretary Claire Williams was delighted with the response to the show and said all the companies in the delegation reported an excellent show.

Under the expert eye of the fairs UK agent, Antony Wakeham, the whole show ran very smoothly with the British contingent attracting a lot of attention including coverage on Dubai's prime time business channel.
Claire was interviewed on behalf of the group securing a five minute slot on national television, while also gaining many column inches in the business press.

EC On-Line Consultation on Animal Transportation Supports Welfare Improvements
Results of EC consultations on the transportation of animals announced last Monday clearly call for improved welfare conditions for all animals on their final journey to the slaughterhouse.

In his address to the EC Agricultural Council on 16 December Commissioner David Byrne said that the messages coming across from their consultations with major organisations and the public, via the EC website, were that "maintaining the status quo was not acceptable and that weaknesses in the current legislation must be addressed".
Over 4,000 people responded to the on-line consultation and the vast majority demanded better regulation on space allowances and on the standards of transportation. At the same time, stricter conditions for the approval of transporters were called for - as well as a harmonised licensing system for drivers.

Paints to be honored with All-Breed Award at USDF convention

FORT WORTH, Texas-The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) recently issued 20 awards to 10 American Paint Horses with its All-Breed Award for 2002.
Awards were given for outstanding performances in events governed by USDF and supported by the American Paint Horse Association (APHA). More than 35 breeds compete for the USDF award every year.
"These horses have really accomplished something special at this competition," said Linda Knowles, APHA awards coordinator. "This award honors a horse's track record throughout the entire year, and these Paints rose to the challenge."
The USDF All-Breed Awards require that scores be earned at one of the more than 750 USA Equestrian/USDF-recognized competitions that were held throughout the country from Oct. 1, 2001, through Sept. 30, 2002. To be eligible for these awards, a minimum of eight scores must have been earned from at least four recognized competitions and from four different judges. These requirements help to ensure that scores are truly representative of a horse's overall performance and not the result of one outstanding show or favorable judge.

ILPH Ball An Unqualified Success
A great time was had by all at the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) Equine Jubilee Celebration Ball held in London at the end of November when over 750 revellers danced until the small hours.

Roly Owers, Director (Support) at the ILPH, said after the Ball " We were delighted to mark our 75th Anniversary in such a special way. The Ball wasn't run as a fundraising exercise - we just wanted an opportunity to celebrate the horse and the work of the ILPH since its foundation in 1927."
But now after all the final sums have been done, thanks to the generous sponsorship and ticket sales surpassing expectation, all the costs were covered. This allows the auction and raffle revenue of £23,000 to be put towards the ILPH work to help improve equine welfare around the world.
