Promoting Racehorse Retraining
Following
recent publicity regarding the unaffiliated dressage classes taking
place at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre over the winter in which
participants with horses that have formerly been in training will
be eligible to win some additional prizes at the end of the series,
it has been decided to extend the classes included and incorporate
the Preliminary classes too; to date only participants in the Novice,
Elementary and Medium classes qualified for eligibility for such
additional prizes.
Please
remember to advise the secretary if you are eligible and claim your
P.R.R. rosette.
The

The re-schooling of racehorses for alternative sports is something
that is gaining recognition as people realise that these horses
can indeed adapt very well to a life off the racecourse; such awareness
has mainly come about through the now very well-known "Racehorse
to Riding Horse" scheme established by SEIB (South Essex Insurance
Brokers) and run so well by Nicolina MacKenzie which covers a wide
variety of disciplines, both affiliated and unaffiliated and runs
for several months before the winners are ascertained by way of
a points system, culminating in an awards dinner in London; NAF
(Natural Animal Feeds) also sponsor classes and were very committed
for this year's British Riding Clubs Championships.
It is important to point out that no-one involved in any of the
schemes, incentives, etc. to promote ex-racehorse ownership is working
in competition against each other - we are all working towards a
common achievement - and whilst it is acknowledged that these horses
by their physical make-up will not, say, make Olympic dressage champions
- they most certainly can achieve a considerable amount in many
sports given the time and correct training, which of course is no
different to the attitude required for the training of any horse.
